5 Tips for Insuring Your Classic Car

Here at Farm Boy Garage, we love classic muscle cars and classic trucks! We know you love your classic and muscle cars too. That’s why we protect them by keeping them clean, waxed, and tuned up but do you have the right insurance coverage on your classic car? In this week’s blog, your Midwest restoration shop would like to share some tips for protecting your baby!

What You Need to Know

A classic car policy will include similar coverages as a standard auto insurance policy, like property, liability, and medical coverage. Here are some differences between standard and classic car insurance.

Your Car’s Value – Because each car is so unique and conditions are different, there is no way to possible to find a book value like an everyday car. The first step should be for you and your insurance company to reach an agreement on the value of the car. Make sure that this value is specified in your policy and your car will be covered up to that in case of loss. Unlike your wife’s sedan, your classic car may gain value over time. Make sure you stay on top of your coverage as your car appreciates.

Repair – If your classic car is in an accident and is in need of repair you don’t want the insurance company to tell you where you to get it repaired. Your policy should allow you to take the car to a facility of your choice.

Does Your Ride Qualify for Classic Car Coverage?

Age is not the only factor to qualify for classic car insurance. Requirements will be different between each carrier you talk to, but these basics will need to be met for most insurance companies.

A Clean Driving Record – You may not qualify for classic car insurance if your driving record is less than impressive.

Limited Use – Most insurance companies will not let your classic car be your everyday driver. The policy may include mileage limitations. Some may even require you own another vehicle as your primary car.

Secure Storage – This probably isn’t hard for most classic car owners, but most policies will require you to store your ride in a secure and private structure, like your garage or storage facility.

Finding the Right Insurance Company

Now that we know a little about classic car insurance here are some tips for finding the right insurance company.

1. Read Reviews

You want an insurance company that has a good track record. Read their reviews and see what customers say about their claims process.

2. Understanding Classic Car Values

Talk with different insurers and you will quickly be able to tell if they understand the values of classic cars. If your car is totaled in an accident, you want someone who understands to have your back. Like we stated earlier, you and your insurance company should agree on the value of your car.

3. Service

Choose a company that cares about you and your special car. Make sure they are available anytime you may need. Can you call and get a real person on the phone?

4. Stand Behind Their Product

Make sure the company has a positive credit rating. If the policy is underwritten by a company that is A.M. Best rated, the better chance they will stand behind their services and products.

5. Coverage

Of course, you want the best coverage for your ride. Make sure the company offers all the coverage you need and want. They should offer roadside service with special transportation options for your classic, coverage for spare parts and specialty tools, or protection as your vehicle is being restored.
