7 Things You'll Only Find in Iowa

Everyone has at least some level of pride when it comes to their hometown or home state. It's just part of how we're raised. Whether it's being a die-hard fan for your local sports team or believing there's just simply no better place to call home, we are all guilty of being 'just a bit biased' of our homesteads. At Farm Boy Garage, we're no different. We think Iowa is the best place to call home! Here's 7 things you'll ONLY find in Iowa that makes it so great!

1. Dunning Springs Park
This spectacular park is considered to be one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Iowa, so it's definitely something you'll want to see. Featuring a breath-taking 200 foot natural waterfall, this is the perfect place for hiking, picnicking, or just checking out some super gorgeous scenic views. Just a few miles away you can also check out the Deborah Ice Cave that stays cold enough for ice to remain on the walls even in the summer months!

2. The Hula Hoop Tree
In 2015, a storm blew through Amber, Iowa, causing 2 hula hoops to get caught in a tree. Since then, families travel to "Her Majesty" to add their own hoops to the tree and see this unique display for themselves. The Hula Hoop Tree is one of Eastern Iowa's most beloved landmarks!

3. Ice Cream Capital of the World
Le Mars, Iowa could quite possibly be the sweetest place on earth for any ice cream enthusiast! After all, it is home to Blue Bunny Ice Cream. It wouldn't be a trip to Le Mars without a stop at the ice cream parlor. And the ice cream parlor doubles as a museum to learn the history of Wells, the owner of Blue Bunny Ice Cream. The pride of this namesake is very evident with the display of 50 ceramic ice cream cone sculptures around the town.

4. The Hobo Museum
Determined to preserve the history of the American Hobo, the Hobo Foundation was formed in the mid-1970s. The foundation, made up of hobos and residents of Britt, Iowa – home of the National Hobo Convention since 1900 – tasked themselves with ensuring that the stories of the American Hobo and Britt Hobo Days would be told for generations to come. The Chief Movie Theatre on Britt’s Main Street was purchased and turned into a museum. The museum is inexpensive and educational about the history of hobo’s throughout the last century.

5. The Big Treehouse
A massive treehouse with 5,000 square feet of space sits near Marshalltown. The 12-level treehouse built in 1983 features electricity, a microwave oven, a telephone, running water, a grill and 13 porch swings. Guests reach this treehouse by first crossing a replica of the 1901 M&ST L Railroad Bridge. Other notable pieces to this place include the Skywalk 2000, which wraps around the 10th level, a 60-step spiral staircase and a replica of the Rainbow Bridge.

6. The Grotto of the Redemption
Some call the Grotto of the Redemption the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Father Paul Matthias Dobberstein, who came to West Bend in 1898, spent a decade collecting rocks and stones and then spent another 42 years building the nine grottos that tell the story of the life of Jesus. Each is decorated with items, including semi-precious stones, a rock from the South Pole and petrified wood, according to Roadside America.

7. Maquoketa Caves State Park
Maquoketa Caves State Park is arguably our most unique state park, featuring more caves than any other Iowa state park, a trail system linking the caves, limestone formations and rugged bluffs. Hike the trails and explore the many caves of all sizes and shapes. Some caves are large enough to feature lighted walkways, while others you’ll have to crawl into with your flashlight.
