Sneak Peek Under the Hood: Meet Cuda!

At Farm Boy Garage, Bryan's employee selection is unlike any other. Not only does his employees need to be experts in what they do, but they also need to have great personalities, excellent customer service skills, and be an overall good person. It's not just the people that Bryan requires these characteristics from, though. These characteristics are especially important for our shop dog, Cuda! This week, we're introducing to you our beloved Cuda, and sharing with you a little history of the pit bull breed.

Meet Our Shop Dog, Cuda!
Cuda is a 3-year-old silver pit bull. Bryan rescued Cuda from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in 2017. Cuda’s duties around the shop include sleeping on her comfy leather chair in the office and she is Farm Boy Garage’s Foreman. She acts as Bryan’s eyes when he is not around to ensure everyone is working, safe and happy. When Cuda is not at the shop you might find her in the pond behind the shop playing with the frogs.

Cuda loves to be pet and hang out with the crew. Her sweet temperament and demeanor can always improve shop moral. Don’t let her breed scare you, she is very compassionate and kind. In fact, some Farm Boy Garage visitors love her more than the cars!

History of the 'Pit Bull'
While the history of the pit bull type dogs isn't all sunshine and rainbows, it's important to understand where these wonderful dogs came from and how they came to be the dogs they are today. Looking back into history, this particular breed was originally bred as a working class dog. Some were bred for for bull and bear baiting. They were specifically bred for their strength, agility, and loyalty to their owner. Others were bred to be companion 'nanny' dogs because of their compassion, loyalty and gentleness with their owners and children. When baiting large animals was banned in the 1800s, people turned to using these smart strong dogs for another purpose: dog fighting. It's this era that gave these lovable and compassionate dogs a bad rap, and set the path for a tough future for these misunderstood pooches.

Because of the turn of events that introduced these dogs into the unfortunate life of dog fighting, breed-specific legislations were put in place all over the world, restricting and banning people from raising and owning the pit bull breed. For years, the media shown an ugly spotlight on the breed that had people blindly following the stereotype that they created: these dogs are aggressive, dangerous and can't be trusted. Too often, pit bulls (and dogs mistaken for the breed) across the world were being punished because of these false media allegations.

Thankfully, over the years, people have started to become wise to the mud-slinging that the media has done. People are realizing that these wonderfully affectionate dogs are just vastly misunderstood and that they're actually smart, loyal and very compassionate. Just like any other dog, their temperament and behavior is developed through a complex interaction between environment and genetics. In other words, it's all in how they are raised.

A Shining Ambassador of Her Breed
As a rescue, Cuda has seen both sides of the pup world. It could have gone either way for her, lying her disposition in the hands of fate. Fortunately, Cuda found a loving home with Bryan and Farm Boy Garage. Now, Cuda is a shining ambassador for her breed, and shows everyone who visits Farm Boy Garage just what a great companion a pit bull can be!

So, next time you're in town, be sure to stop by Farm Boy Garage to say hello and give our hard working shop dog, Cuda, some good ol' belly rubs. You'll quickly fall in love with her adorable face and sweet personality. She'll probably even share a seat on her couch!
