Top 5 American-Made Muscle Cars
The 1960s began the birth of American muscle cars. American automakers began stuffing the biggest engines they could find into the smallest, lightest chassis that would hold them. Performance was the most important consideration put into building these top-dog legendary cars. As Fourth of July draws near, we thought it would be fun to celebrate this spectacular holiday by looking back at some of the most iconic American-made muscle cars ever created. Check out Farm Boy Garage's list of "Top 5 American-Made Muscle Cars"!
1. Pontiac GTO
It wasn’t the fastest, the most powerful or the most outrageous muscle car, but Pontiac’s GTO makes the top of the muscle car pantheon because it was the first: the car that gave birth to the muscle car genre. This high-performance automobile put muscle cars on the map, thus leading it to start the list of our 'Top 5 American Muscle Cars'. The GTO was one of the fastest production cars of 1964. Its only real street competition consisted of cars like Ford’s 289 Mustang, Chevrolet’s 327-cid Chevelle SS, and Plymouth’s 270-cid Barracuda. A stock GTO was the hottest game in town for 1964.
2. Chevy Chevelle SS
The Chevy Chevelle is one of the most iconic classic muscle cars to ever have been produced. Many muscle car enthusiasts would go so far as to declare the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 as the king of muscle cars, while others would argue that the '69 Chevy Chevelle COPO is king. Today, the performance-oriented Chevelle Super Sport models are considerably more collectable than most classic muscle cars produced to date.
3. Dodge Charger
There's no denying that the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T Hemi was a muscle car with star quality. The 2nd generation Charger was one of the decades handsomest muscle cars, suitably described as being "all guts and purpose". The 440 Magnum V8 was standard on the Charger R/Ts, however, many muscle car fanatics opted for the 426 Hemi option with a slightly longer-duration cam, new valve springs, and revisions that reduced oil consumption.
4. Ford Mustang Boss 302/429
The twin "Bosses" proved to be some of the most remarkable Mustangs of the "ponycar's" entire lifespan. This super hot small-block was built to compete against the Chevy Camaro Z28. The Boss 429 could accelerate to 60 mph in as little as 5.3 seconds, running the quarter in just over 14 and hitting 102 mph. The Boss 302 could hit 60 mph in as little as 6.5 seconds. It's quarter-mile times went into the mid-14s, with speeds in the upper 90s. The '69 Mustang Boss 302 and 429 were the highlight of many new Mustang creations of 1969.
5. Chevy Camaro Z28
The 1967-1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was created after Chevrolet's Camaro and became a racer's delight. With a hefty purchase price for its time, wins - not sales, were the Z28's main goal. And in due time, they were convincingly achieved. In 1968-69, the Camaro dominated the Trans Am Championship series after falling 2nd to the Mustang's lead over the past two years prior. The first-year models are the most collectible Z-28s today.
