Collector Worthy Cars: '69 Chevy Camaro

If you've ever asked someone who isn't a huge classic car enthusiast what their favorite classic car is, chances are they've answered the '69 Camaro. Reason? It's one of the most memorable muscle cars around! Featured in movies like Charlie's Angels and 2 Fast 2 Furious, the popularity of the '69 Camaro has even made its way to the big screen. But what makes this performance pony our pick of the month for a collector worthy classic car? Let's take a look.

A New Look
The 1969 Chevy Camaro marked the last of the first generations of Camaros and is arguably the most popular. It featured entirely new, more aggressive looking sheet metal and a revised grille. Transitioning to a flatter, wider looking stance, going away was the original coke bottle shape. A redesigned dash and more comfortable seats made it more livable, too. But it was the staggering array of available performance equipment that marks 1969 as the greatest model year for Camaros.

More Options
Although restyled inside and out, drive-train and major mechanical components were carried over from the 1968 Camaro. Manual drum brakes remained standard for base models, with optional front disc-brakes switching to a single-piston caliper design, replacing the earlier and more expensive  four-piston style. The two-speed Power-glide transmission was replaced by the three-speed TH-350 automatic.

The Camaro was available in many different options. The Rally Sport option with hidden headlights, special stripes and wheels, special bucket seats, nice carpeting, and other items could be added as a separate package to any of the models. The Sport Coupe was longer and wider this year, had bucket seats, carpeting, and an improved Astro Ventilation System. The Z/28 was for the road racing fan, including dual exhausts, special suspension, heavy-duty radiator, quick-ratio steering, and 15×7 inch rally wheels. The SS had big power, a special 3-speed transmission, sport striping, and a heavy insulated hood.

Turning Heads
With a top speed of 147 mph, going 0-60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, proved to be the performance pony car that buyers were looking for. Camaro sold a total of more than 240,000 cars during the 1969 model year. Whether it’s love of the look of the first-generation F-car, a quest to feel the power of the legendary Z/28 or a big-block, or the desire to have something that reminds you of turning heads at the Burger Biggie on cruise night, the 1969 Camaro is one of the most popular muscle/pony cars out there.
